Mission of The Marpa Foundation for the Study, Practice, Support of the Buddha Dharma

The Marpa Foundation is a nonprofit religious corporation under the spiritual direction of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche. Established in 1994, The Foundation supports nunneries, schools, and retreat centers primarily for women in Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. It also supplies food, medicine, and other necessities to solitary retreatants in these lands.

An equally important mission is to preserve and transmit the Buddha Dharma by making experienced teachers available to those who wish to listen, reflect, and meditate on the precious teachings. Each year The Marpa Foundation coordinates with local Dharma centers throughout the world to help organize the teaching tour of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Marpa's revered spiritual director, and the tours of Rinpoche's senior students whom he has appointed as teachers.

The Foundation grants stipends to support the endeavors of translators whose life's work is rendering sacred Buddhist texts into English and other western languages. Many of these translations have been published by Snow Lion, Shambhala Publications, and other well-known publishers. On occasion, Marpa Foundation funds the publication of its own or others' books.

Marpa Foundation funds help support elderly, handicapped, and impoverished people in Central Bhutan. Funds are also offered to Dharma centers around the world to help their growth or beautification.

Current goals are to provide instruction in written and spoken Tibetan, to continue to train accomplished translators, and to publish and disseminate their translations.

The Marpa Foundation is run by volunteers and thus has little overhead. If you feel moved to support the Foundation's activities, your donation will be most appreciated. Please make tax-deductible contributions payable to The Marpa Foundation, and send them to:
